Principles of Caregiving Training is required for any caregiver providing Attendant Care Services for ITC Personal In-Home Care.
Read the following information to learn how to become certified. The
"Principles of Caregiving" training's found on the ITC website, are
preparation for the actual test, which must be administered at ITC.
Direct Care Worker Training and Testing Program
AHCCCS has instituted new training and testing requirements for Direct Care Workers (DCW) who provide direct care services (Attendant Care, Personal Care and Homemaker) to ALTCS members residing in their own home. There have always been training requirements, but without specific requirements for the training and testing of DCWs.
Continuing Education
All ITC employees that are hired on or before September 30, 2012 are not required to take Principles of Caregiving. This is because the state has grandfathered in all caregivers hired on or before this date. However, to keep your grandfathered status and to prevent you from needing to take Principles of Caregiving, it is required that 6 hours of continuing education be completed. If by the end of the year you do not complete 6 hours of continuing education you will lose your grandfather status and it will be required that you then take Principles of Caregiving training before you will be able to provide Attendant Care, Personal Care, and Homemaker services.
Principles of Caregiving is a training that you will only have to take once. There is no expiration date or need to be re-certified. However, you must be re-certified in Principles of Caregiving if you do not complete the mandatory 6 hours of training.
Each slide show from the module sections will have a quiz that reviews the section. You can complete these quizzes and have them count towards the 6 hours of mandatory training.
How to Get Certified
To become certified in Principles of Caregiving you must complete two modules.
To complete the modules you will need to view the slides from
each section of each module and complete the quizzes. Once you
have completed all the quizzes you can can then make
an appointment with the instructor to do the written tests
and skills tests.
Written Testing
There are two written tests required for being certified in Principles of Caregiving. There is a test for the level 1 module, Fundamentals, and a test for the level 2 module, Developmental Disabilities.
- Level 1 test includes 100 questions from the module and will have 1 hour and 40 minutes to complete (1 minute per question). This test can be open book / open notes. A score of at least 80% is required to pass. The test is only available at the ITC office and can not be copied or leave the training room.
- Level 2 test includes 64 questions from the module and will have 1 hour to complete ( about 1 minute per question). This test can be open book / open notes. A score of at least 80% is required to pass. The test is only available at the ITC office and can not be copied or leave the training room.
Skills Testing
A qualified instructor must perform the evaluation. Please call ITC for the name of the instructor for your office. Caregivers taking the skills test will be allowed a brief period of time to practice all skills with the appropriate equipment. Test takers shall demonstrate skills through simulation or role-playing, using a volunteer where appropriate. These skills must be demonstrated with 100% accuracy. The list of skills are:
- Level 1
- Hand Washing
- Gloving
- Lifting / back safety
- Use of fire extinguisher (simulation/description)
- Calling 911 (description)
- Level 2
- Assistance with ambulation
- Use of gait belt
- Assistance with transferring out of bed
- Assistance with eating
- Assistance with dressing, using a blouse or shirt
- Positioning in bed
- Wheelchair to chair transfers
- Techniques for re-positioning a person in a chair/wheelchair
- Redirect a person
- Assistance with tooth brushing
